Officers Slain in the Line of Duty

 In Remembrance of 

 Sergeant Michael J. Carroll

Fell victim to a madman’s bullet while seeking to capture the individual for commitment to the Norwich State Hospital, on December 11th, 1934. The man had hidden in his room on the top floor of a Washington Street residence and fatally wounded the Sergeant with one blast from a single-shot, 12 gauge shotgun as Sergeant Carroll attempted to open the door to his room on the upper story, The killer then reloaded and committed suicide to end the tragic sequence of events. Sergeant Carroll had been a twenty-two year veteran of the department and has the distinction of being the first motorcycle officer and first traffic officer.
