The School Resource Officer Program is a collaborative effort by Norwich Police Department, Norwich Public Schools, students, parents, and the community to offer law related educational programs in the schools in an effort to reduce crime, drug abuse, violence, and provide a safe learning environment for everyone.

The program started in Norwich during the school year 2007/2008. Officer’s trained and certified through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) were placed into the city’s two middle schools (Teachers’ Memorial & Kelly). The department currently has three certified SRO’s, Officer Kevin Creamer, Officer Chris Conley and Officer Anthony Gomes.

Goals of the SRO Program

Bridge the gap between Law Enforcement and today’s youth

Teach the value of our legal system and allow students access

Promote respect for people and property

Victim awareness

Crime prevention

 School Safety

This is accomplished through the basic SRO Triad Concept

The School Resource Officers also serve as Positive Role Models for our youth.

Setting clear limits of what is acceptable and what is not

Setting an example by resolving conflict

Being honest and giving accurate information about risks

Being professional, visible, and accessible

Encouraging responsibility by discussing choices and consequences.

Showing respect towards students and adults

The SRO’s work closely with the school’s administration on all aspects of safety plans and issues. They work closely with the teacher’s in presenting classroom curriculum to the student body, which includes Internet Safety, Interacting with Police Officers, Juvenile Justice System, and Sexual Harassment/Laws. The SRO’s initiated an after-school mentoring program as well as a student police academy.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact one of the SRO’s through the links and numbers provided on this page.
